Anna Hazare will have to see who surround him

With the winning of current round of battle between Anna Hazare and the government we have seen the force of new generation and will now be going to witness the impact of this generation on the governance of the country. The entire incidents of last week has shown how a leader with impeccable integrity, followed by jeans clad young generation as also the earlier generation can force the government to come to talking table. The new technology of internet and social networking sites were handy tools in the whole process of mobilising people. In this respect this movement resembles Jasmine revolution of Tunisia and Egypt. Those who have witnessed the total face change of Anna's village Ralegansiddhi in Maharastra and surrounding areas, already know his hundred percent commitment to social change by mobilising very people who were degenerating the society. The villages where entire male population were inebrieted twenty four hours, where womenfolk had to travel on foot several miles to fetch drinking water were totally changed place withing few years. Today the farmers in these villages take two crops a year by efficient rain water management, whole population has shunned the vices of drinking, gambling, buy lottery tickets. There are village committes to deal with all kinds of issues. After that Anna directed his energies at wider level and his efforts, and specifically the mobilation of people in Maharstra and his fast has forced corrupt ministers in Maharastra to resign. Now he has arived at national level. He may be hoping to force the very politicians to change the polity and administration who have dirtied it. The incidents of last week leading to winning of current round of battle has been witnessed by all. But the war has just began. The Lokpal bill has to be finalised by the 10 member committee being appointed which will be chaired by Pranab Mukherjee, co-chaired by Shanti Bhushan whose members will be Arvind Kejriwal,Swami Agnivesh,Prashant Bhushan,Verappa Moily,Khurshid Alam,P Chidambaram and others. The government has already drafted a Lok pal bill which is different from Anna's Jan Lokpal bill. Naturally the government representatives will try to convince other committee members to see that those provisions of Jan Lokpal bill which are seen as too harsh are mellowed down. But a balanced bill has to be worked out in the end and this has to be finalised before the monsoon session. The current zeal of supporters has to be maintained untill the passage of the bill. Because drafting the bill is one thing and getting it passed by the politicians is altogether different game. Unless the momentum of the mass movement is kept intact, politicians will not see the urgency to pass the bill and there may be tendecy to differ it. There is another aspect of this movement. The society gets leaders it deserves. We have corruption because we don't revolt bearing it. Today we are revolting, that is why the movement has started. Before we did not. In the crowd of people who have gathered in support of Anna are many who are not above board. There are quite a lot of people who have come in media to support the movement but were themselves involved in controversies in past. The emphasis of present movement is economic corruption. But various other corruptions prevail in the society. There is need to pay attention to these also.
